Ankur Desai holds the Ned P. Smith Professorship of Climatology, is Associate Chair and Professor of the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and faculty affiliates of the Nelson Institute Center for Climatic Research, Nelson Sustainability and Global Environment center, and the UW Freshwater and Marine Sciences program. Desai is a micrometeorologist and ecologist who investigates how space and time scales influence ecosystem exchanges of greenhouse gases, energy, and momentum with the atmosphere, with studies located in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, the central Rocky Mountains, to the tropical dry forests of India. These investigations include field-based measurements using tall towers and meteorological research aircraft, in addition to computational numerical simulation of ecosystem dynamics and the atmosphere. By combining experiments, long-term distributed observations, and climate models, Desai has advanced our understanding of how past, present, and future changes in climate, land use, and other pressures affect ecosystems and feedback onto climate change. Desai teaches meteorology, climate science, and ecology to undergraduate and graduate students every semester. He is also the past chair of the American Meteorological Society Committee on Agricultural and Forest Meteorology, is editor of Journal of Geophysical Research, and serves on several international and national panels on climate observation and carbon cycle science. He received his Bachelor's degree in computer science and environmental studies from Oberlin College, a Master's in Geography from University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. in Meteorology from The Pennsylvania State University. Since 2007, he has lived in Madison with his wife and three daughters.
